The Last Food of England
'Hardy' and Winnie wildfowling: he is holding a white fronted goose in his left hand and a grey lag in his right. She is a Chesapeake retriever, a breed of dog known for its webbed feet and indifference to the cold. We arrived in the dark and sub zero temperatures, and waited to see what, if anything, the dawn would bring. A skein, a swarm, a plague of geese rose, three thousand strong from a distant and hidden lair, collected, and made straight for us. We reached the bag limit of six, and ate everything we killed.
